Skating Club
Of Boston
180,000 sq.ft
Fall 2020
Norwood, MA
Located off of University Ave in Norwood, MA this 180,000 sf, ground-up
three skating rink facility was built for The Skating Club of Boston, a
100+ year old figure skating group. The three rinks consist of a 2,500
seat, Olympic-sized main sheet that will also be used to host various
events ranging from Olympic qualifying, ISU, and theatrical ice shows.
The two remaining rinks will be standard size. The first of which will
seat 1,500 and figure skating only, the other will be multipurpose and
allow hockey, where they are working with the local town team. In addition
to the primary program of the rinks, the facility will also include a physical
therapy suite managed by a third party with exam rooms, radiology, dance,
and off-ice training space. Working with Montreal-based metal building
manufacturer, Lainco, we utilized their proprietary architectural truss
system to span the main rink while creating an eye catching aesthetic the
client was looking for. The exterior of the facility will primarily be a thermally
efficient two-tone insulated metal panel with a continuous sloping roof.
The street-facing façade plane is then broken by creating two decorative
wood toned towers, roof deck, and a healthy amount of glazing to help
bring in the natural northern light to the main rink. In doing so, this
creates a striking image as visitors from all over the world enter this facility.
