Working with the nonprofit community sailing

organization Courageous Sailing, studioTROIKA

embarked on a large scale architectural and planning

effort to revitalize Charlestown’s Pier 4. The project

will create a new flagship building for Courageous

Sailing that includes boat building and maintenance,

boat rental facilities (reception, training, changing,

and meeting areas), offices, conference rooms,

and a lecture and reception hall available to the

general public. Located on a pier, the building

serves as a beacon to the city for Courageous and

the Charlestown Navy Yard. The project includes

redesigning Pier 4 to increase public participation,

allow for access to the water, and enhance Courageous

Sailing’s year round program activities. Elements

include seating and viewing, play areas for children

and adults, protected swimming areas, elevated pier

infrastructure for rising sea level, accessible roof

deck, and sustainable energy initiatives.
